They just tell stories
by Ralkkai
When I was younger
I would say
the only reason
people like Poe
or Shakespeare
was because
they wrote with a time
that our language doesn’t
know anymore.
I would say
they just tell stories
that anyone can.
I felt I was right
afterall
when you read it,
with the thous and thines
and all those
little phrases with footnotes
for us to decypher
like linguistic archeologists
and you scrape away
the dead flowers and
then they are all just stories.
I was not aware of
literary devices.
I would read
Bukowski and Crane
and think
this is good.
This doesn’t read
like an effigy.
Yeah,
Bukowski wrote crap
but a good kind of crap.
The kind that makes it
hard for you
to explain to anyone
who doesn’t know.
He wrote of the mundane
and whores and alcohol
and betting on horses
in simple ways and with
simple words.
He wrote in a
good crap sort of way
that worked for me
and not others.
And now–
I wonder if that is why
I never understood
Poe
or Shakespeare.
They wrote a
good kind of crap,
in a good kind of crap
sort of way,
the kind that made it
hard for someone like me to
understand.
I’m older now and
jumping back into it all
with both feet
and maybe I’ll revisit Poe
or Shakespeare
and find out
what kind of toilet paper
they wiped with.
LOL love it!
Thanks for reading it and glad you enjoyed it!

Love it!
My first reblog, thanks!
You welcome! Great read!
Very interesting take. I could see hints of Bukowski in the formatting, though I wonder how you feel about e.e.cummings and the soft type of poetry he wrote. Straight forward voice, and easily identified by its strong presence.
Most of my poetry, at least from before my 5 year hiatus that I think I’m back from, was pretty heavily influenced by Bukowski, as he is my favorite poet. I think I’m in the middle of a style/phase change so I’m beginning to exlpore new devices and read a larger variety of styles to expand on. I remember reading Cummings back in high school and not really understanding “Grasshopper” or “r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r” rather, but I looked into his early stuff and vaguely remember liking it. I do plan on revisting him sometime down the road though.
Well, in any case, it does sound good. I’ve found in most individuals not rooted in their own specific poetic style tend to allow some of their best work to be massacred by a lack of “proper” formatting. Play around for a while and see what style best meshes with your words.
Isn’t it ironic, the older we get the more we understand that we don’t know crap ! This is clled Wisdom. good blog
Yeah I believe we all knew it all when we were in our late adolesence, then grew up and found out that wasn’t ever the case. Glad you enjoyed it!
Early morning brain fog makes it impossible for me to spell.
😀 I really enjoyed the way you dissect “good kind of crap”… “thous and thines” and the readers interest.. Way to Go!!
Thanks for the feedback, glad you liked it!
Beautiful!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
It’s funny..that’s precisely what I feel…also, like you say, Bukowski writes in a
‘good crap sort of way’ that so definitely works for me.
Glad you liked it, thanks!
This was a gem of a poem to read, I like your honesty and rawness, but at the same time it scares the crap out of me, same way that reading Bukowski does. It is all so real, so un pritty, so at my door and stitched to my eyelids, while Poe (who is my favourite writer) makes me escape, makes me run, makes me see something that is not actually there and which is just what I needed.I even wrote about this precise thing myself, actually a dedication to Bukowski and how his honesty scares me 🙂
I really really liked your ending and not to bore you more,I jsut really enjoyed this poem.
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I’ve always liked Bukowski’s simple, raw approach over the traditional styles, but I still do respect the legacy left by writers like Poe. He was actual the writer that got me into poetry.
Brilliant!!! loved it so much…cos its true mostly.
Glad you liked it!
So are you going to let us know when you find out what toilet paper
they wiped with?
Hopefully by the end of summer.

Wonderful! I think that many people have or have had those same feelings about celebrated authors and their work. I do love Poe though.
Nicely done!
Thanks!
Loved the ending “find out what kind of toilet paper they wiped with” … reminded me of an exam question from when I was about 15 – “What was Shakespeare thinking when he wrote The Tempest?” …my answer “Who Cares”. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the book….
I like what you have to say here. I think that people are too stuck on thinking that things will always be good. I’m glad you brought this forth. I was told that my writings are junk too.
I always feel like there is nothing right or wrong about writing. People are so stuck on formatting and grammar that when they see someone say the word fart they become all crazy. I have always given literature of any kind a chance. If I can’t understand it then I will put it back on the shelf or read another book that will explain it in a simpler way.
I am never ashamed of saying I don’t understand something, because there are other books that can explain things in simpler details like the young adult books. Some of those books helped me so much when I needed to learn about any subject in simpler ways.
I have a learning disability and learning through reading simpler books helped me with completing my education. Now I write books in simple ways and I get bombarded with horrible reviews. I hope one day I will be able to help other people with learning disabilities like these books helped me.
I like your poem. I like what you wrote and my advise to you is to keep writing poems. I like them and I’m sure others out there will like them too. Keep up the good job. 🙂
For me, all good poetry ultimately comes back to real life, one way or another.
This is good crap!
Oh, this was fantastic and just my style! I can totally relate to crap stories. Thanks for sharing!
You welcome.
Jumping into that good kinda crap with both feet huh? 😉 Thou hast captured my attention with this read. I really enjoyed this, well done! Congrats on the Press too!
Thanks!
Loved it a lot!! brilliant! 🙂
HAHA I never really appreciated Shakespeare til I took an English course that focuses on Shakespeare’s works.
I think some of those who say they love Shakespeare and Poe don’t actually understand or love them after all. Like the kind of “I love them just because everyone loves them.” I commend you for being so honest and voicing out what others are scared to voice out 🙂
Hahaha, I totally feel what you’re saying here. But you put it much more eloquently!
This is brilliant and funny. I am not a fan of Shakespeare either. and i agree that maybe it’s because they
“wrote with a time
that our language doesn’t
know anymore ”
that made them so great.
Really enjoyed this, especially the last line about finding out what kind of toilet paper Poe and Shakespear wiped with– I can almost ascertain that it was not mass-produced!
Fresh and Inspiring!
This is really great. My favorite part would be:
“and you scrape away
the dead flowers”
Nice and visual.
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it.
only yesterday i was having a similar discussion on Shakespeare and his style of writing (abrupt phrases, weird words, even more difficult comprehension) and whether it was me alone who didn’t understand or appreciate it but am glad that there are many of us who feel so. loved it. all the best and congratulations!
Thanks!
Very fresh and beautiful 🙂

I like your blog. Great post
A great read on a Monday Morn!! fresh and loved it!!
I love the way your poem expresses the notion that colourful language does not necessarily make great writing. Writing, even when lyrical, has to be simple to understand. Great post
Thank you for the lyrics. Very clever and gently.

It is a very especial lyrics. Read it carefully and you’ll like it, without any doubts. Just feel it and no more thoughts…
the only crap bukowski wrote was hollywood
and pulp
if you think his other words are crap
you might need to
read more
or maybe you missed the
point
thanks.
I’m going to approve this comment as I am a supporter of a censorship-free internet. With that said, I have read just about every book of Bukowski that I could find since I first stumbled upon him back in 1998. I have owned over 20 physical books, have read more and am now collecting digital copies. He is my favorite poet and one of my favorite writers in general. The lines in the poem were obviously misunderstood by you and that is a shame, it is also a shame that you don’t seem to fully appreciate his approach with “Pulp,” as it was never meant to be a great masterpiece of our time, etc. In reference to his works being “crap, but the good kind of crap” it refers to the fact that he never sugar coated his poems and never tried to write in stanzas and use proper devices that were acceptable in the past 200 or so years of poetry. This poem reflects the concept that even though Bukowski hasn’t been able to enjoy a popularity among the industry until recently, I felt that I could always relate to his style. While everyone was still coveting Poe, Shakespeare, Dickinson, Longfellow etc, Bukowski went against that grain of proper devices and for that he wasn’t well perceived during his time. It is great that he now has the following that he does, as seems fitting for dead poets in our society. Again, I’m sorry that you misunderstood this poem. Thanks.
This makes me think of how we had to analyze and over-analyze pieces by classical writers i.e Shakespeare and Poe. Was Romeo and Juliet really intended to be taken as seriously as it is today? Probably not…
But the stories are just a chicken wire fame to hang the language on….
wow like you were in my head i used to hate Shakespeare guy i hated the those complicated wording i’m much of a simple person who likes simple crap .
much enjoyed
thank you for sharing
zara
Impressive combination of freshness and nostalgia – really into it!

I enjoy your poetic style – it’s really punchy but has a slow pace. It’s great!
Flippy amazing. Brilliant poem. I love love Bukowski and Shakespeare but I think I see what you are saying. I think I look closely into Shakespeare for the hidden crap. I like the anger in humour, the drunk in Macbeth, the violence in olde words from Iago in Othello, my favourite play The Merchant of Venice, the clever woman playing the foolish men.
